Lady Red Wolves Move into Second Place

The HCA Lady Red Wolves defeated Blue Ridge Christian Academy 2-1 on Friday to break a tie for second in the conference.

Emily Brown scored both of HCA's goals between these evenly matched teams. Goalie Emily Fish blocked a penalty kick late in the match that sealed the victory.

HCA's defense made the difference shutting down Blue Ridge's breakaways. Throw-in play was a problem for HCA the last time they played each other. That game was called due to lightning when the match was tied.

Coach Richard Fish is pleased with the team's late season surge. "I was glad to see our mid-fielder Sarah Womack help control the ball and set up some great shots on goal. Senior Grace Lynch had a 30-yard shot that was on center but just inches high. Our younger players are also getting in shots and gaining confidence just in time for the tournament."

Fun at the Spring Formal

The high school classes of Haywood Christian Academy held their Spring Formal on May 5, 2012.

This year's theme was "Ocean of Love" and was held at the Lake Junaluska Terrace Hotel Ballroom. The aqua colored decorations included seashells, goldfish in bowls and a lighted "waterfall." It was a beautiful setting indoors and out, coordinated by Mrs. Heidi Wiggins. Many of the students posed for photographs taken beside the lake. Even late in the evening the full moon and the lighted cross provided a stunning view for those on the balcony.

The semi-formal attire flattered the very attractive group of students. The girls had a lovely display of colorful dresses. Pressley Parker, Will Wiggins, and Aaron Killian provided music. See the Haywood Christian Academy Facebook page for more extraordinary photographs of the evening.

HCA Receives New Smart Board

Haywood Christian Academy received a new 77" Hitachi Starboard last week for its high school math and science department.

This is the second interactive whiteboard for the private school located in Clyde. The other board is used in the science department.

HCA's high school math instructor, Faith Woods, was excited to put the new equipment to use. "Having a new Hitachi Starboard in my room is a math teacher's dream. It enables me to bring the classroom alive with color, animation and interactive graphs. I love the fact that all my class examples are digitally captured for students who are absent. My students seem to enjoy the change from a traditional whiteboard or overhead projector. I can't wait to explore all the other amazing things I will be able to do with this board, and I am very grateful to the donors who generously provided funds for it," says Woods.

Interactive presentation tools are in demand for educators and others who want to involve their classes in learning alongside technology. An interactive whiteboard can interface with a computer, displaying images through a digital projector, and its users can control the software from either the computer or the board, where they can manipulate images or text. Students can simultaneously participate by adding their notes or pointing out material using a pen or highlighter.

This addition is part of an initiative that HCA's Headmaster, Blake Stanbery, says is important to their students' success. "We are focusing on STM - Science, Technology and Mathematics - educational enhancements for the upcoming school year. We will be rolling out more technology that gets in the hands of our students this fall."

HCA Soccer Routes Hendersonville

The HCA Lady Red Wolves shut out Hendersonville Christian 6-0 in conference action on Thursday.

Senior Emily Brown scored 2, Hattie Stanbery 2, Ellie Wiggins 1, and Sarah Womack 1. This was HCA's first win of the season, but head coach Richard Fish is not disappointed. "We have been improving incredibly each game. I knew it would take a couple weeks with such a young team and now we are in the conference stretch doing great."

The Lady Red Wolves also call themselves "Wolves United". Team co-captain, Grace Lynch says that "united" is our theme this year. "We really wanted to focus on teamwork and building each other up", said Lynch, "so we call ourselves wolves united". This is Lynch's last season as a Red Wolf. She will begin classes at Charleston Southern University this fall.

HCA is 1-4 going into Spring Break after facing North Asheville Christian, Cherokee, Swain County, and Veritas. The offensive strength of Veritas was on display Tuesday when they had 30 shots on goal. Although HCA goalie, Emily Fish did an incredible job stopping 25 of those shots, the offense struggled to get any in the opponent's goal.

HCA Science Department Receives New Microscopes

Students at HCA are enjoying using new microscopes allowing magnifications up to 2000X.

The older scopes were standard high school optics allowing for a capacity of only 400X magnification. Their oil emersion capabilities will enhance the study of microbiology and offer a view into the intricate, yet precise, workings of the cellular machinery at this level. HCA received designated donations to fund 100% of these state-of-the-art microscopes.

"Our scientific coursework affords students the opportunity to learn scientific principles through the eyes of the Creator by understanding the order and purposeful design evident in all creation," said Mrs. Zonya Harris, science instructor at HCA. "It is easy to see the Creator's hand at work in nature when viewing the 'big things'! How much more amazing it is for students to see the hand of God in the order and intelligent design features at the cellular level."

The new edition microscopes will especially enhance the life and biological science courses as well as anatomy and physiology level course work at HCA. The private Christian school located in Clyde adheres to the state standards with regard to credits and undergraduate admissions criteria to the UNC college system.

HCA Students Serve at Community Kitchen

Students from Haywood Christian Academy (HCA) recently served at the Community Kitchen in Canton.

Beverly Brock, Executive Director of the non-profit who uses volunteers to cook and serve and clean, welcomed a group of HCA's eighth graders. The Community Kitchen provides meals to those in need seven days a week. "It's a flurry of activity for a couple hours every night, and those boys jumped right in," said Brock.

HCA has community service requirements for its students each year. Students look forward to these events all over Haywood County. "Usually we think it's going to be all hard work but when we're done we want to know when we can come back!" said Seth Rich. Rich is an eight grader at HCA who says he has grown to like giving back to the community. "What we are trying to instill here is a genuine desire to serve rather than a requirement to work", said Blake Stanbery, HCA's headmaster. "The Community Kitchen does a great job of serving the elderly, homeless, unemployed, and any others who just need a meal and a safe place for friendship."

HCA Accepting Students for the 2012-2013 School Year

Haywood Christian Academy is accepting enrollment applications for the 2012 - 2013 school year.

Application forms may be downloaded here.

The school welcomes families to schedule a tour of the campuses, where parents may meet the school's professional administration and faculty. Their low student/teacher ratios create a beneficial learning environment in this independent K-12 school located in Clyde.

Kelli Herbert, HCA Elementary School Principal, remarked "We provide a nurturing, yet challenging learning environment for all students. Haywood Christian Academy focuses on the spiritual, social, emotional and physical needs of each child. Because of the class sizes, students receive individual attention and are able to establish relationships with teachers and peers."

For more information, interested families should contact the school office at (828) 627-0229.
