HCA Accepting Student for Second Sememster

Haywood Christian Academy is accepting enrollment applications for the second semester of the current school year.

The school welcomes families to schedule a tour of their campuses, where parents may meet the school's professional administration and faculty. Their low student/teacher ratios create a beneficial learning environment in this independent K-12 school located in Clyde.

Financial aid is available to all families for tuition and fees. The academic timing for transferring between schools can be easy during this time period because HCA is on a modified block schedule for middle and high school and their second semester begins January 17.

Kelli Herbert, HCA Elementary School Principal, remarked "We provide a nurturing, yet challenging learning environment for all students. Haywood Christian Academy focuses on the spiritual, social, emotional and physical needs of each child. Because of the class sizes, students receive individual attention and are able to establish relationships with teachers and peers."

HCA Holds Annual Christmas Gala

The students of Haywood Christian Academy held their annual Christmas Gala inspired by the great classic, "It's a Wonderful Life."

Guests were able to leisurely stroll through the Christmas "town" and met the town folk. Students performed in different venues around campus, showing family holiday traditions, including HCA Family at Worship, HCA Around the World, HCA Family at Home and HCA Family Snow Fun. Everyone gathered on the front lawn for a candle lit closing and carol singing.

There was a bazaar for Christmas shopping and a "Starving Artist" sale, where student artwork was available for purchase. Other student work was presented in the art gallery, poster displays and gingerbread house displays. Duckett Farms sold fresh cut Christmas trees and wreaths. Guests also enjoyed triple-chocolate fudge cake, coffee, punch and hot wassail.

"Celebrating this glorious season with our HCA family is definitely part of a 'wonderful life,' and we had a great evening together. Truly we know the life of Christ is a wonder," said Penny Readling, HCA art instructor.

HCA Helps the Community

Haywood Christian Academy had the opportunity to partner with Woodland Baptist Church to help members in the local community.

The students collected non-perishable food items and warm winter clothes to donate to the Haywood Baptist Relief Center and the Haywood County Homeless Shelter. Students from both campuses participated in the drive, collecting several dozen coats and many boxes of food.

Clydette Burke, Woodland Baptist Church member and HCA Pre-K teacher, said, "The food and coat drive was a great success. The donations helpedmany people who may not have had enough to eat or warm clothes to wear during this winter season."

HCA Makes Donation at Annual Charity Ball

Haywood Christian Academy (HCA) recently held its fifth annual Black & White "Winter Wonderland" Charity Ball at Maggie Valley Club.

The ballroom was filled with beautiful décor, desserts, dance and debutantes. Each year HCA's student council interviews charitable organizations for consideration of donating all ticket proceeds. A crowd of over 100 was in attendance to see a $500 donation presented to Kay Miller of Haywood County Arts Council.

The vision of the Haywood County Arts Council (HCAC) is to involve the community in the arts through their mission of building partnerships that promote art and artists, exploring new cultural opportunities, and preserving our mountain artistic heritage. HCAC is involved with many local activities including the Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM) Program, Arts in the Schools, International Festival Day, Gallery 86 and the Swannanoa Chamber Music Festival. The HCA high school junior/senior winter court was also presented that evening. All three Senior Class girls were crowned. Music was provided by Adam Saunders. A special thank you goes to Heidi Wiggins for coordinating the school's social event of the year.

HCA Announces More Scholarship Money for New Transfers

Haywood Christian Academy announces the expansion of their scholarship program for students who want to transfer this school year.

Families may apply online by clicking HERE. The school has recognized an unprecedented number of families unable to afford the cost of private school tuition.

HCA's scholarship promotion includes athletic scholarships, academic scholarships, and tuition assistance funds of up to $2,500 per student. The application may be found HERE. HCA is in their fifth year as an independent private Christian school located in Clyde. Their administration is looking to make opportunities for new families in this time of economic recession.

Not surprisingly, more families who are keeping their children in private schools are seeking financial assistance. The National Association of Independent Schools reports that between 2008 and this year, the amount of financial aid awarded to families increased 36 percent. Across the country more families are asking for money, so less aid is being awarded per student. "We don't want to reduce the award amount per family because of the increased need, so we are pleased to increase our assistance program instead", says Blake Stanbery, Headmaster at HCA.

The timing for those interested in athletics is great because basketball season is just getting underway. HCA competes in the Blue Ridge Christian Conference and has a 16-game schedule that includes 1-A high schools such as Nantahala and Blue Ridge as well as perennial private school power Veritas. The first game is November 22^nd. HCA has soccer, baseball and golf on the schedule for the spring.

The academic timing for transferring between schools can be easy in early November or mid-January because of the 9-week grading periods that end at those times. HCA is on a modified block schedule for middle and high school and their semester ends January 13th. Although some classes are full, there are seats available in this soon to be accredited K-12 school. "We have been gaining momentum as we approach global accreditation status for next school year and want to avoid any economic setbacks," says Stacey Messer, HCA's development director. "This recession has been a game-changer," says Messer. "We went through a period where Americans had extra income, but that period has ended."
